Disc Pain

Intervertebral discs are small cushions positioned between the vertebrae in the spine.  The outside of the disc is made from cartilage, and in the center is a jelly like solution.  These discs serve many purposes, including allowing movement of the spine, creating space between the vertebrae, and acting as shock absorbers.  The gelatinous middle (nucleus) allows the disc to compress and expand based on impact and movement.  Unfortunately, trauma to the spine can cause the discs to herniate, bulge, become protruded/displaced (slopped disc), or even rupture.  Trauma or direct injury to the area is not the only cause, however.  As we get older the discs can weaken and dehydrate.  These conditions can put pressure on the nerves around the spine and cause pain.

Chiropractic Treatment

If you suffer from one of these injuries you should see a Chiropractor.  Surgery has become less risky, but is still expensive, and requires recovery time.  At Brookview Chiropractic, we experience every day the improvements in combining both traditional chiropractic manual therapies (what we call spinal manipulation or spinal adjustments), with more advanced therapies such as decompressive traction.

Success rates with discs tremendously improved with MLS Laser Therapy integrated into the care plan.  Because the tissue in the disc absorbs light at the 808/905mm wavelengths and that light triggers metabolic reactions in the cells that stimulate healing as well as pain/inflammation reduction.  MLS M6 Laser is the “missing link” in treating disc pain conditions.  In the majority of disc cases you will experience relief from these conditions through chiropractic.  By properly aligning the spine, combined with Laser, pressure can be relieved on nerves and on the discs themselves.  This will reduce, and in most cases, eliminate your pain, discomfort and  allow you to live a normal lifestyle.

Gains are maintained with stretching and core strengthening exercises you will be instructed in that you can do at home.  These are specifically tailored to your personal condition.  All of my disc patients receive exercise instruction for long term stability and prevention of recurrence.  This helps minimize the likelihood for repeat episodes and reduces your dependence on treatments and medications.
